That was the kaupapa [purpose]; to imbue a non-traditional medium [ceramics] with integrity, and to forge a link with Māori custom and values.
Manos Nathan
Manos Nathan (1948–2015) and Colleen Waata Urlich (1939–2015) were founding members of Ngā Kaihanga Uku, a Māori art collective formed in 1986. The collective aimed to support Māori artists who were working with clay, a medium they described as having a waiata (song) of its own.
Ngā Kaihanga Uku formed to share their knowledge and skills nationally, and to shape an identity for a medium either forgotten or abandoned in favour of others by their Māori tūpuna (ancestors).
