Overview
This camera, used by Spencer Digby, was able to produce large negatives. These gave high quality prints that allowed for easy retouching - the covering up of imperfections with a knife and a soft lead pencil.
Cameras like this are nineteenth century in style, and slow and cumbersome to use. But at the time, clients accepted this and didn't expect being photographed to be instant.
