Overview

'Don't give me culture, I'm not hearing you Rob. I can buzz around like a Beehive boy, but I'd like to see you do my job.'

‘Culture?’ was written by the Dunedin band The Knobz (formed 1979) in response to Prime Minister Rob Muldoon’s refusal to lift a 40% sales tax on local recorded music (originally instituted by Labour in 1975) and his declaration that pop music was 'horrible'.

The catchy song was immediately successful, with comedian Danny Kaye impersonating Rob Muldoon on the recording. The accompanying video featured the band dressed up as the 'Beehive boys'.

The tax was removed in 1981.
