Overview

This chest protector was one of many made by protesters at a working bee at Trades Hall, Wellington, during the 1981 Springbok rugby tour to protect themselves against the new long police batons which aimed at the chest area.

It was worn during a protest march to Athletic Park in Wellington on the day of the second test on 29 August 1981.

Materials

It was based on prototypes designed by Paul Wotherspoon. The protection consists of sturdy cardboard tubes covered with corrugated cardboard, with calico straps attached.

Significance

Those in the front line needed to be resourceful as clashes between anti-tour protesters, rugby supporters, and police became increasingly violent.
