Overview
In 1982, the New Zealand reggae group Herbs released the song 'French letter' to protest against French nuclear testing in the South Pacific. It became a popular hit and protest anthem. The band re-released the track in 1995 when France briefly resumed testing.
The Herbs were among New Zealand's first reggae bands to produce original reggae exploring important New Zealand issues such as New Zealand's anti-nuclear stance, the Rainbow Warrior affair, and Maori land rights, most notably Bastion Point.
