Overview
Waitress inspired
This sleeveless black dress, with its prim crisp collar, and large doliy print, which mimics an apron, is from Kate Sylvester’s Brighton Rock collection, which was inspired by Graham Greene’s novel of the same name. Set in Brighton, England in the 1930s Greene's murder thriller features a teenage waitress called Rose, who marries Pinkie Brown, an up-and-coming gangster.
Australian Fashion Week
Kate Sylvester debuted her Brighton Rock collection at Australian Fashion Week. Sylvester set the runway as a table. As the models strutted its length they kicked the china teacups and plates out of the way.
Prior to the foundation of New Zealand Fashion Week in 2001, a number of New Zealand designers participated in Australian Fashion Week which was founded in 1996. After showing in Australia in 1998, Sylvester commented: ‘Australian Fashion Week totally changed the way we thought about ourselves and how the world perceived us’.
