Overview

Niki Hastings-McFall has created this lei (necklace) out of fish-shaped soy-sauce bottles – the sort you get with takeaway sushi.

Customarily, lei represent respect and status in the Pacific and are often gifted on special occasions. But this lei, with its plastic fish, urges us to consider the processed nature of food today – even in a place where fish abound – and the effects on the environment.

After all, swirling in the middle of the Pacific Ocean is the world’s largest rubbish patch – a vast mass of plastic carried on tides from around the globe.
