Overview
Clear glass milk bottles like this one were used to deliver milk to New Zealand households from the 1920s to the 1980s. This bottle has '1/2 IMPERIAL PINT' (which is approximately 280ml) moulded near the bottom, and on the base is 'F55'.
The Milk Run
Until the 1980s, when the domestic milk market was deregulated, most New Zealanders had milk delivered to their doorstep by a milkman. Initially milk was carried in large vats and delivered to containers waiting outside each household, but by the 1950s health and safety concerns had prompted a switch to glass bottles in most places.
