Overview
This small green glass bottle was used to store Yorkshire Relish, a popular sauce produced by Goodall, Backhouse & Co of Leeds. Both the name of the product and the name of the company are inscribed on the side of the bottle.
Drops of Deliciousness
Yorkshire Relish was first introduced in the mid-1860s, and quickly became popular with British and colonial consumers. Within a decade Goodall, Backhouse and Co. were turning out over 300,000 bottles of relish every month, and claimed to be the largest sauce manufacturers in the world.
Advertisements for the product promised 'a ripe, rich spiciness in the flavour' that would make 'the plainest viands palatable, and the daintiest dishes more delicious.' Suitable for use at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Goodall's tagline in the 1920s was 'Every meal you can embellish, With little drops of Yorkshire Relish.'
