Overview
This 12-sided glass jar has a circular neck and rim, and has moulded lettering on the side reading 'Flag Brand registered trademark.' Also written on the bottle are the words 'This bottle is the property of Hayward Bros. Co. Ltd. Christchurch', and on the base is the number 'Z162'.
Hayward Brothers Co. Ltd. commenced business in 1890, and their 'Flag Brand' pickles, sauces and vinegars quickly found favour in New Zealand homes. By 1899 'Flag Brand' was reported to be one of the best-known trademarks in the country, and the company was producing between 600,000 and 700,000 bottles of sauce and pickle annually.
