Overview

These ornate epaulettes were worn by Commander Willoughby Shortland of the Royal Navy, Administrator and Colonial Secretary of New Zealand in the early 1840s.

 

Epaulettes were originally for keeping shoulder-belts in place, and gradually became signifiers of rank.
