Overview
Many of New Zealand's early gold and silver objects were made and engraved to mark important events in the people's lives, such as births, christenings, scholastic achievement, community service, engagement, and marriage.
Born at sea
This silver mug was made and engraved to commemorate the christening of Percy Seaborn Macassey in 1873. He was born at sea, hence his unusual middle name. As a young man, he was a noted footballer and athlete in Dunedin, and in later life he became Crown Solicitor in Wellington.
