Overview
This chair was made in around 1850, and it is the only one of its kind known to exist in New Zealand. The combination of the 'sabred' front legs and the distinctive arm pattern originated in continental Europe, but was not used by British craftsmen. Nineteenth-century settlers came to New Zealand from all over the world, and these global influences are reflected in early colonial furniture.
