Boy's sailor suit

This boy's sailor suit is an excellent example of the influence of naval uniforms on children’s dress since the mid 19^th century. In this case, the 'sailor-look' includes dark navy blue and squared collars.

 

The popularity of the sailor suit can be traced backed to its adoption by the British royal family in the 19^th century, and the growing popularity and democratization of seaside holidays in the second half of the century. In 1846, Queen Victoria’s 4-year-old son Edward, the Prince of Wales, was presented with a miniature version of the uniform worn by sailors on the Royal Yacht. It was a great success (partly because of pride in the British Navy), and was influential on both children’s and adults’ dress for years to come.

 

The sailor conjures up images of obedience, order, bravery, and loyalty, but also freedom of spirit, independence and rebellion.
