Overview
Maud Mary Ann Brown (1873 - 1941) embroidered this scene of the Wanganui River in 1891. She has rendered the scene, which features a group of Maori on the banks of the river and in a waka and native flora and fauna, in both watercolour and needlework on a silk ground.
The picture is framed in a flat, mitred rewarewa frame.
Te Papa holds another example of this scene. PC00798 was embroidered a decade earlier by Alice Clapham, who emboridered her picture at Mrs Murray's School in Lower Molesworth Street, Wellington. It is not known if Maud attended the same school.
