Overview
This front fastening bodice is made from red, blue and cream cotton plaid, and is trimmed with pleated emerald green ribbon and rosettes. The full sleeves, which have been shaped into the puffs from the shoulder to the wrist with ribbon, are known as Gabrielle sleeves.
Plaid fabrics were very popular from the 1840s through to the 1860s. The bodice would have originally been worn with a bell skirt. Due to the amount of fabric in skirts, they were often refashioned / upcycled into the latest silhouette or into children’s clothes.
