Lace was labour intensive to make, and expensive – only the wealthy could afford to wear it.
Bobbin lace , shown here, was fashionable across Europe from about the 1620s. It was braided from multiple threads, each wound round a slender, dangling bobbin. Styles and techniques varied regionally.
