Overview
This medal was awarded to Mary Tyer for the handicrafts she entered into the New Zealand Industrial Exhibition in 1885. At 15 years old, Tyer dominated the juvenile section of the Home Industries Branch of the Exhibition. She filled an entire case with her work: wax flowers, leatherwork, woolwork, crewel embroidery, applique, macramé, lacework, sewing, crochet, and arrasene embroidery.
The obverse side of the medal depicts scenes of Wellington harbour and local industries, and a coat of arms based on the New Zealand seal. The reverse side of the medal is engraved with Tyer’s name.
