Interior with monochromes

Richard Hamilton’s screen print shows three overlapping views of the same room from different angles.

The British pop artist has peppered the scene with references to modern art history. For example, a 1970s painting by conceptual artist Joseph Beuys hangs behind the sofa, and a blue square references Yves Klein’s signature blue paintings (1950s–60s). In the bottom left corner is a picture of Gerrit Rietveld’s iconic De Stijl (The Style) chair from 1917.
