Overview
Douglas MacDiarmid lived in Wellington from 1949-50. He held weekly sketching sessions in his Wadestown flat with fellow artists and friends John Drawbridge, Juliet Peter, Helen Stewart and Helen Hitchings. This sketch, one of three of Drawbridge in Te Papa's collection, shows MacDiarmid's great skill as a draughtsman.
A number of John Drawbridge’s sketches from this period are also held at Te Papa, including this striking pastel and crayon drawing of MacDiarmid: https://collections.tepapa.govt.nz/object/1365394
