Thomas Gainsborough; attributed
Overview
This wash drawing, probably late 18th century and British, was formerly attributed to the famous artist Thomas Gainsborough (1727-88). It comes from the same collection of works on paper presented to the National Art Gallery in 1957 by Archdeacon Smythe. In the collection there are two other 'Smythe' Gainsboroughs whose attribution has been authenticated, Wooded landscape with figures (1957-0009-292)) and Woody landscape with horseman near a pond by a cottage (1957-0016-8). The feathery quality of the drawing of foliage shows the definite influence of Gainsborough's landscapes, as does the low-key rural subject matter, with a fallen log dominating the foreground.
