Jan Hackaert; artist
Overview
This engraving, based on a painting - present location unknown - by the Dutch Golden Age artist Jan Hackaert, is interesting for several reasons. Firstly, it reflects his considerable status as an artist a century after his lifetime. Secondly, it reflects the thirst for knowledge, documentation, exploration and discovery that characterised the Enlightenment context in which it was made. Thirdly, it is by a rarity in the historical collections of Te Papa, a woman engraver, Jeanne-Francoise Ozanne (1735-95) who was from a family of engravers, including her brother Nicolas. They both specialised in maritime themes. And finally, it shows the value of the often devalued medium of reproductive engraving in providing providing invaluable records of often lost or destroyed original art works.
