Overview
In a dark studio, women gather to paint a model draped in blue. Here, Maud Sherwood gives us a glimpse into the life of female artists in the early 20th century.
Sherwood grew up in New Zealand but left to study art in Europe in 1912. There, she was influenced by impressionism and post-impressionism, reflected in her use of broad, expressive strokes of colour to create form. She eventually settled in Sydney, Australia, where she introduced her female peers to the more modern European styles of painting.
The painting got a lot of attention when it was exhibited in Adelaide in 1920. One critic wrote: ‘Maud Sherwood (N.S.W) has provided another object lesson for aspirants in oils with "The Model", a singularly able group. The colour scheme of grey, brown and blue is an essay in discipline. There is no straining after effect and the drawing is without a fault. Students … might find it worthwhile to study this picture.’
