Overview

This cup is a rare example of a large New Zealand made sporting trophy in gold. It was made by Charles Cowan (1878-1962), a talented artisan who worked for many years for the Auckland firm of Adolph Kohn Ltd.

A sportsman and craftsman
Cowan's specialty was making sports trophies. In his spare time he was known for his own sporting achievements as a track athlete, rower, and footballer.

This cup was only raced for once. It bears the inscription: 'Auckland Racing Club Exhibition Cup, Boxing Day, 1913. Won by Mr. F. Dorset's "Sir Solo". Time 3.29 3/5.'
