Overview
This piupiu (plaited waisted garment) was made specifically to compliment the form of a [Waikato?] poupou that was exhibited in the Mana Whenua taonga Maori gallery in 1998. It has a plaited harakeke waistband with a decorative rolled muka outer layer, over a woven kaupapa (fibre skirt).
Rangi Te Kanawa is a third generation weaver, her grand mother was the late Dame Rangimarie Hetet and her mother is Diggeress Te Kanawa, two of the most acclaimed and respected traditional Maori weavers in New Zealand.
