Overview
This graver, by an unknown maker, was used by Wellington jewellers and watchmakers Henry J. Freeman, Cecil M. Bay, and Cliff Catchpole in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The graver has a mushroom-shaped wooden handle with a brass ring at one end, attached to a short, square-shaped metal shaft. One third of the curved part of the handle is missing. The letters "DB" are engraved on top of the handle and "5" on the side of the shaft.
Gravers like this one were used in metalworking to engrave designs onto metal. The round handle was held in the palm against the little finger of the right hand while the metal being engraved was held by the left hand on a soft surface.
