Overview
This graver, made by Vautier of Switzerland, was used by Wellington jewellers and watchmakers Henry J. Freeman, Cecil M. Bay, and Cliff Catchpole in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This graver has a mushroom-shaped wooden handle. There is a small piece of wood missing out of the stem. A metal shaft with a curved tip is attached to the handle. A small design of a clay pipe and the words "Vautier" are inscribed on one side of the shaft and "65" on the other.
Gravers like this one were used in metalworking to engrave designs onto metal. The round handle was held in the palm against the little finger of the right hand while the metal being engraved was held by the left hand on a soft surface.
