Overview
This graver, made by Antoine Glardon of Switzerland, was used by Wellington jewellers and watchmakers Henry J. Freeman, Cecil M. Bay, and Cliff Catchpole in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The graver has a spherical wooden handle, attached to a rectangle-shaped metal shaft with a curved tip. "N" is carved into the wooden handle and "Antoine Glardon" and a symbol of a fish are engraved on the shaft.
Gravers like this one were used in metalworking to engrave designs onto metal. The round handle was held in the palm against the little finger of the right hand while the metal being engraved was held by the left hand on a soft surface.
