Overview
The catch cry ‘be a tidy kiwi’ was introduced by the Anti-Litter Council (established in 1967) to promote the reduction and eradication of litter in New Zealand.
The Anti-Litter Council became the New Zealand Litter Control Council in 1979, then became Keep New Zealand Beautiful in 1984. Keep New Zealand Beautiful is a not-for-profit charitable organisation which focuses on ensuring a cleaner, more biologically diverse, and improved climate future for Aotearoa.
The kiwi as symbol
The kiwi flourished as an emblem in Aotearoa throughout the twentieth century, becoming fixed as the symbol of the country and its people between the 1940s and 1980s.
This sticker features a kiwi bird carefully putting a banana skin into a rubbish bin/basket.
