Something safe / Te Kore

Something safe/Te kore, 2022 The image depicts a man floating foetal-like in water, holding a bouquet of roses. A white veil covers him, resembling a membrane. While details of the series' origins are unclear, Ranginui mentions it stems from recovering from a great loss. The trauma is evident, drawing comparisons to a foetus in utero. The full-grown man replaces the developing baby, hinting at innocence or a need for protection. The bouquet of flowers suggests the unachievability of safety while expressing love, empathy, or grief. Something Safe/Te Kore is part of a small series currently consisting of five works that were exhibited at Aotearoa Art Fair in 2022.
