Overview
The tinier the pieces, the more skill and time it takes to stitch together a tīvaevae ta‘orei (patchwork quilt). This one took three months to make and consists of thousands of squares of cotton sewn into a ‘handkerchief’ pattern.
It was made by the late Tuainekore Tara‘are. Her daughter, Tapaeru Tara‘are-Skinnon, made another tīvaevae in this exhibition, featuring a more modern version of the same pattern.
