Overview
The New Zealand 1990 Commemoration medal was instituted by the New Zealand Government to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. The medals were awarded during the 1990 celebrations to about 3,000 people who have, by their virtues, talents, and loyalty, made a recognised contribution to New Zealand life, especially the various 1990 celebrations. Subsequently 3,632 medals were awarded.
The medal was designed by the New Zealand Herald of Arms, Philip O’Shea, and was struck in bronze-gilt metal by the Royal Australian Mint. The reverse bears the official 1990 symbol, a kotuku (or white heron) which was designed by Fred Graham and Roy Good. The medal was accompanied by a certificate bearing the signatures of The Queen, the Governor-General, and the Prime Minister.
