This studio portrait of two friends was taken on the day they enlisted, 1 May 1916, during the First World War (1914-16).
Thomas Francis Fennessy (1887-1956, Australia/New Zealand) is seated. He was a labourer upon enlistment, and was a Private with the 17th Reinforcements, Machine-Gun Section, New Zealand Expeditionary Force (Army number 20317).
He served in Western Europe from late 1916 to early 1919 and was finally discharged in 1920.
