Overview
This brooch was made for the first national celebration of Matariki on Friday June 24, 2022. In partnership with Te Arawhiti and supported by Manatū Taonga and Te Māngai Paho, Te Papa hosted the official launch of Matariki as a public holiday. It is the first Māori and first Government-recognised First Nations public holiday in the world.
The brooch is one of a set designed by Tyrone Ohia, Viv Teo, Eva Charlton and Samantha Todd of design company Extended Whānau. The brooches feature crosshatches in nine different colours, each representing one of the stars of the Matariki cluster.
The brown star represents Tupuānuku, the star associated with food from the ground.
