Overview
This one pint glass bottle was used by the Wellington City Corporation Milk Department for delivering milk. The department began delivering town milk in recyclable glass bottles in the 1920s. Before this, milkmen transferred milk from large cans into containers that residents left by their gates. The change to bottles was made for hygiene and health reasons. By the 1980s glass was being substituted with cheaper disposable materials like plastic and laminated paperboard.
