Overview
Whāngai i te Hautapu o Matariki 23-6-22 was made by Nikau Hindin in 2022 for the Japan Aichi Triennial. It documents the rising and setting of stars on the first public holiday acknowledging Matariki in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Nikau has long explored Māori concepts of time and space in her arts practice and her detailed star maps are part of an ongoing pursuit to draw on mātauranga Māori to see the world in the way her ancestors did.
This piece was displayed in the threshold gallery during the ‘Toi Tuku Iho: Aute’ programme held at Te Papa Tongarewa at the official launch of the Matariki National holiday in 2022 as part of the Matariki Celebrations.
