Overview
The British magazine Amateur Cine World ran from 1934 to 1967 and was bought by keen amateur filmmakers throughout the British Empire and Commonwealth. This badge belonged to a New Zealand subscriber.
Cinema became hugely popular around the world during the twentieth century, both in terms of consumption and making. The magazine contained informative articles written by experts, such as how to film babies, camera tricks, and the best equipment to buy. It also provided constructive criticism of amateur films to help people improve their technique and equipment.
Amateur Cine World's Ten Best Films of the Year Competition drew hundreds of submissions from around the world, with Dunedin artist Frederick A. O’Neill winning a gold star in 1959 for his animated film Phantasm. He was the first New Zealander to win gold. Christchurch Movie Club screened his film along with other winning entries in 1960.
