Overview
Hui Takatāpui is an annual gathering in Aotearoa New Zealand to celebrate and strengthen the sexual and gender diversity of Māori. The first hui took place in 1986 within the auspices of the New Zealand AIDS Foundation.
The first hui was in response to a homophobic backlash experienced by some within Māori communities during homosexual law reform in 1985-86, and the early years of the AIDS crisis.
This tote bag celebrates the 30th anniversary of Hui Takatāpui in 2016.
