Overview
This doll belonged to Dawn Procter (nee France) when she was a young girl. It is a Princess Elizabeth doll made by Madame Alexander in New York who were well known for their quality dolls. Many Madame Alexander dolls were made in the image of a famous person.
Dawn received her doll in about 1937 when she was about three years old. Princess Elizabeth and other members of the British royal family were hugely popular figures in New Zealand. The doll was made at the time of the coronation of King George VI in 1937 when a doll in Princess Elizabeth's image was a highly sought after item. Dawn was particularly lucky because her family owned a toy shop on Lambton Quay in Wellington, and she often received the latest and most sought after items before anyone else.
The doll comes complete with its original clothing and a wedding outfit, hand made by Dawn when Princess Elizabeth II married Prince Philip in 1947.
