Morgan Carpenter; designer; 2013; Australia
Overview
This badge features the intersex symbol. It was first designed as an international flag in 2013 by Morgan Carpenter of Intersex Human Rights Australia.
Carpenter wanted to design a positive, distinctive and colourful representation of intersex people. Carpenter was inspired by the documentary Yellow for Hermaphrodite - Mani's story (2002) about New Zealand intersex educator and counsellor Mani Bruce Mitchell (MNZM). Yellow has long been regarded as an intersex colour, and was originally associated with the word 'hermaphrodite'. Mani reclaimed the colour as a strong golden yellow.
Both yellow and purple are considered neutral in terms of gender. The purple ring is about being unbroken, whole and complete, and symbolises the right to make decisions about one’s own body.
