Overview
This pattern enabled people to make their own Brownie uniforms (using official fabric and buttons).
The style of this uniform was part of a dramatic change in 1986 when the Girl Guides Association of New Zealand changed its colours from dark blue and gold to aqua, white and blue, with a softer brown for Brownies.
Part of the attraction of the Girl Guide movement, and its survival, was its commitment to being modern and progressive. Uniform updates were a key part of this.
This was the last period of homesewn uniforms. As guiding uniforms adopted more casualware (such as sweatshirts, polo shirts, skivvies and t-shirts), people bought their uniforms from district outlets or by mail order.
