Overview
The Children of Rangi & Papa: The Māori Story of Creation, is the only book Pauline Kahurangi Yearbury (nee Blomfield), the first Māori artist to graduate from Elam School of Fine Arts in 1946, published in her life.
Created in 1976 with the support of a Māori Fund Board grant and printed in the same year it is a large format book that features reproductions of 15 gouache paintings by Yearbury of bold modern figures drawn the Māori creation stories as illustrations and rendered in deep and rich colour. The text and illustrations are based on George Grey’s ‘Polynesian Mythology’ book republished in 1956.
As a limited edition version, the book has a cloth covered slip-case and a bound leather cover made of goat skin that is embossed on the front with a gold imprint of one of Yearbury’s images. Inside, the end papers use handmade Japanese rice paper and pages of the book are gold edged.
