Overview
This safe sex poster was created by the New Zealand AIDS Foundation and Sanctuary, a gay and bisexual men's sex-on-site venue in Auckland. The poster is clear about how to protect against the Human Immunodeficiency Virus ('always use a condom and waterbased lube').
This message was hard-won. AIDS was first diagnosed in 1981, but the HIV virus was not discovered until 1983, and finally named in 1986.
Since then, the New Zealand AIDS Foundation has produced many campaigns to encourage people to adopt condoms and safer sex practices to prevent the transmission of HIV.
