Overview
For trampers in remote areas of New Zealand, mountain radios like this transceiver were for many years the only way to communicate with the outside world. They could be hired from clubs and other providers. Then at scheduled times in the morning and evening, trampers would contact the Mountain Radio Service for information and weather forecasts. This service continues today with current technology.
Tararua Tramping Museum Trust
This item is from the collection of the Tararua Tramping Museum Trust, which was established in 1989 to acquire and display tramping artefacts. The radio transceiver was selected to represent developments in tramping equipment and aspects of the tramping experience including communications and safety.
