Overview
About the same time McCahon was working on Walk (Series C), he designed the stage sets and promotional material for a festival of four of James K Baxter’s plays in Wellington. The festival was held in memory of the poet and playwright, who died in October 1972.
McCahon first met Baxter when he was in his mid 20s and the poet a young man of 17. He was deeply affected by his friend’s death; the onetime collaborators had fallen out in later years.
