Overview
This lanyard was worn by Bella Simpson when she delivered a workshop on sex, sexuality and gender identity at a health and physical education conference in Palmerston North in 2016. She attended in her capacity as a member of InsideOUT. InsideOUT is an LGBTQI+ organisation which works with youth, whānau, schools and communities to make Aotearoa a safer place for all rainbow youth.
Bella Simpson (born 1996) is a young trans woman who came out socially as a transgender girl when she was 11 years old, and began a public life as a trans advocate when she was 12.
In 2016 she was awarded a Youth Week Award by the Ministry of Youth Development for being a ‘tireless advocate for transgender young people working with InsideOUT and the wider community to help young people who struggle with their identity or feel unsafe to speak out.’ This was the first such award to be given out to the LGBTQI+ community.
