Overview
The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence (also called Order of Perpetual Indulgence) were founded in San Francisco in 1979 by a small group of gay men began wearing the attire of nuns in visible situations - they employed high camp to draw attention to social conflicts and problems in the Castro District. Over time they became an order of gay male nuns, active in their communities and using street performance and Catholic imagery to call attention to sexual intolerance and to satirize issues of gender and morality. Chapters formed in Toronto, Sydney and Melbourne in the 1980s.
