These badges belonged to a New Zealander who attended Gay Games III in Vancouver in 1990 as a member of Team Auckland.
Celebration ’90 Gay Games III & Cultural Festival ran from 4 to 11 August 1990. Over 7000 international participants from 27 countries were involved, making it possibly the world’s largest sporting event held that year. Competition was open to all regardless of ability, gender or sexual orientation, in accordance with the Games’ guiding principles of ‘participation, inclusion and personal best’ (The Origin of the Gay Games Movement | Celebration ’90: Gay Games III & Cultural Festival (communitystories.ca)).
The first Gay Games were held in San Francisco in 1982 to enable people of any sexual orientation or ability to compete together.
