Overview
This is the front page of the Sunday Times, the only mass circulation New Zealand newspaper published on the centenary of women’s suffrage in New Zealand on 19 September 1993. Most of the page is taken up by a photograph of a Waikato rugby player triumphantly holding up the Ranfurly Shield.
The page mentions the suffrage centenary only in one small item reporting what is labelled a 'Storm in a teacup' at a commemorative church service. This item was circled and the whole page was kept by Anne Else, a feminist social commentator, writer and historian, because she saw it as such a clear demonstration of widespread negative attitudes towards the centenary celebrations.
This page stands in stark contrast to the Suffrage 125 edition of the New Zealand Herald, published 25 years later on 19 September 2018, which was guest edited by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and largely dedicated to women’s stories.
