Overview
This beaded tablet pendant is part of objects that belonged to businessman and philanthropist, Sir Joseph Kinsey. The Kinsey Collection was donated to the Colonial Museum in 1936 after Sir Kinsey’s death by his wife Lady Kinsey and daughter May Moore. It was one of many donations that were made in his memory after his death to various institutions.
The tablet pendant is made of coloured glass beads which gained popularity in southern Africa when introduced to the continent. Women became the main producers of beaded clothing and the scale at which beaded crafts were produced from the 19th century onwards was highly dependent on resources provided by western traders and missionaries.
